Research at ACFH
Building an evidence base for mental health interventions in Somalia through rigorous research and implementation within East Africa, with a special focus on cultural awareness and trauma-related conditions.
Our Research Mission
At Acceptance and Change for Health, research isn't just about publications—it's about creating knowledge that directly improves mental health care delivery in Somalia.
We conduct evidence-based research, with an emphasis on a humanistic framework for all our studies and training protocols.
Our research informs policy, guides program development, and ensures interventions are grounded in evidence but formulated for real world situations sensitive to the cultural practices and concerns of our populations. ACFH partners with Acceptance Change University's Institutional Review Board (IRB) to ensure that all work is done to the highest ethical standards.
Research Focus Areas
Trauma-Informed Care
ACFH works to investigate culturally-adapted trauma treatment approaches for conflict-affected populations in Somalia. Our focus is on second-generation trauma victims, but all care and research is provided through the lens of trauma informed care, and not limited by the strict DSM diagnostic criteria of the West.
Psychedelic Assisted Therapy
ACFH partners with leaders in the field to adapt, research, and implement psychedelic assisted therapy protocols for patients in Somalia and Africa utilizing a humanistic framework. Currently our work focuses on MDMA-Assisted therapy however ACFH members have training and interest in other substances that hold the potential to affect meaningful and compassionate change in the lives of those affected by mental health conditions.
